An absolute CRACKER in the Capital ends in a draw!
Saturday Night in Cardiff rounded off the H46PRO Boxing League action for 2019 when Kevin Quigley and Luke Jones boxed out a draw in a match that could have topped the bill on most shows.
Both men made the 83kgs limit, Jones has dropped an amazing 20KGS since we met him for the first time at the National Trials in January – Quigley a silver title holder at LHW spent part of his camp at MTK in Marbella getting ready for this match up, and both combatants did not disappoint making the weight easily.
The match up started with Quigley the southpaw circling dangerously towards Jones right and then counter moving away, you could see that Quigley was trying to hit and move fully respectfully of Jones known power, the first tow rounds was a feeling out process with neither man really taking any sort of advantage,
Jones who flies forward with good head movement at speed looked sharp and didn’t seem to feeling any sort of affect from the weight cut.
In Round 3 the match exploded into life with Jones catching Quigley with a sharp right hand that caused a cut just on Quigley’s nose bridge as the blood started to seep, Jones exploded forward and caught the silver champion with a stunning right hand that dropped Quigley hard – Quigley tried to rise off the floor but dropped down again, he then got his senses back and managed to beat the count. Jones could smell blood in the water at this point and went on the attack – The bell saved Quigley and we made into Championship rounds.
In the corners Jones remained stood bouncing around whilst Quigley was regrouping, from the commentary position it looked Like Quigleys corner was asking him if he wanted to carry on, if there is anything we know about Kevin Quigley is that he never quits.
Round 4 started with Quigley on the front foot knowing now that he had push the fight to get a result, straight he caught Jones with a stunning left cross counter that seemed to bother Jones and seemed to instantly close up one his eyes with a large bruise, Quigley went on the attack with some great forward boxing that he is known for to nick round 4 for sure on work rate alone…. an amazing recovery.
Quigley seemed to rally again in the 5th seeming to desperately want the result, pressing Jones back hard though Jones is pretty unflappable and was getting some good right hand counters through the guard.
When all was said and done over 5 rounds the match ended in a Draw, with both fighters claiming victory at the end. It’s sets up a tantalising 2020 with the Gold Title remaining vacant and a possible rematch on the cards.
Kara Lees President of Live Events and Dan Chapman of D.C Boxing in Maesteg discussing a possible reaper tournament at this weight!
In other action Ira Rowe became a 3 weight champion in only his 3rd Fight in the League when he looked convincing at Welterweight to topple Connor Cooke to pick up the Contender strap, it will be interesting to see what happens with Rowe in 2020.
Matthew “The Egg” Davies at a huge 6.8 picked up the Contender Heavyweight Title when he defeated Stephen Burke with a 2nd Round Stoppage Victory, the new champion at 21 years old is looking ominous as a champion as he will only get better.
That rounded off the action for at least 4 weeks anyway as we move into Christmas, then straight into the U.K National Trials.
